For those of you that are new to this website, I’m Julie Tran and I’m a traveling nomadic Rogue Yogi! I have been carrying around a very tiny wheeled luggage and a backpack with my husband for the past 2 years.
What this means is that I don’t have much room for yoga blocks or bolsters! For the longest time, I felt bad that I didn’t have the proper props to film videos and teach you guys with.
Now, I’ve embraced the nomadic lifestyle and have become excited with discovering easy-to-use props that exist wherever we go! This post will share with you a sequence I’ve practiced in Bali, Indonesia using 2 coconuts!
Finding these coconuts were really great, because they were free, they were biodegradable, and I could throw them back onto the grass after I was done practicing! If you don’t have local access to coconuts, it’s not a problem! The purpose of this article is to show you how easy it is to create Active ranges of motion using things you can find around your home!
Yoga Props You Can Find at Home
Do you have water bottles? Does your family cook rice? How about a zippered bag you can put the rice grains in? These are just a few ideas that can start you towards thinking outside the yoga “box”!
When you want, you can purchase things like small pilates jelly balls, big medicine balls, yoga blocks, and resistance training items like resistance bands and anchored bands you can stack to add quantifiable weight (to do some serious weight training).
Until then, you can save money and peace of mind. I find that when we want things because they look fancy can take away from our yoga practice. They’re all external things that can be gone in an instant.
Without further ado, here’s my yoga sequence you can try at home!
Julie’s Coconut Yoga Sequence
Begin in a Supine position (like Savasana)
Relax with knees bent. Knees together. Feet outward
10x Coconut Leg Lifts
10x Coconut Arm Raises
10x Coconut Cat/Cow (on each side)
10x Active Childs’ Coconut Pose
10x Active Seated Coconut Twists
Drop your Coconut, hands to chest
Option to hug your Coconut to complete your practice
Here’s another sequence using Bamboo! This was amazing for hand and wrist warm-ups (something we could do a lot more of if we sit and type at a smartphone or computer most of the day!)
There’s so many active ranges of motion you can do with these props! If you’ve been doing a lot of stretching into the end ranges of your natural motion, then it’s a perfect time to add in mid-range movements. You’ll want to add strength to support all that flexibility!
Mid-range is the new black!!
